GREENVILLE — Last year, the Troy girls tennis team lost a narrow 3-2 match to Greenville, eventually finishing fourth in the Miami Valley League Miami Division standings, with the Green Wave finishing second behind champion Tippecanoe.
This season, the Trojans already have a head start.
Troy opened the season at Greenville Monday, sweeping the doubles spots and getting a hard-fought three-set victory out of Josie Romick to claim a 3-2 victory over the Wave and begin the season 1-0, 1-0 in the MVL Miami.
“It was good to start with a nice win over Greenville,” Troy coach Mark Goldner said. “Both double teams played consistently in their wins, and Josie pulled out the win for us after losing the first set.”
At first doubles, Esha Patel and Cady Rhea defeated Cheyenne Hartsock and Sadie Lance, 6-3, 6-1. At second doubles, Madailein Logan and Taima Rajab defeated Sarah Savoy and Erin Stephens, 6-1, 6-1.
Romick’s match-sealing victory came at second singles, where she defeated Faith Mansfield 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
“Josie settled down in her last two sets and played consistent tennis, and she made numerous passing shots for the win,” Goldner said.
At first singles, Danielle Robbins lost to Emily Machal, 6-1, 6-0. At third singles, Elizabeth Neimi lost to Felicity Lance, 6-4, 6-4.
“Danielle lost to one of the better players in the league, and Elizabeth played a good match for being a freshman in her first match,” Goldner said.
