COVINGTON — During the J.R. Clarke Public Library’s Summer Reading Program, which continues through Aug. 1, we want all parents, relatives, friends and caregivers to know the following:
• Some activities will be in the downstairs Community Room and some will be held outside.
• The 6-foot social distancing will be followed.
• Masks are recommended, but not required.
• We will all work together to present exciting programs that keep everyone safe and healthy!
• Sign-up for the SRP anytime by stopping by the library; gift baskets, as in the past, will be awarded at the “Imagine Your Story” Finale’ on Thursday, August 6 at 6:00 pm. Remember that each time a child brings back their books; they receive a ticket to place in the gift basket of their choice. More info to follow.
• Refreshments will be provided for some activities.

Friday, July 3 — J.R Clarke Library is “kicking off” their IMAGINE YOUR STORY Summer Reading Program with a whopping “All Ages” Chalk Drawing Activity at 10a – 11:30a. The Kona Ice Truck will be serving FREE Kona Ice drinks and we will have fresh-popped popcorn for all participants! Each contestant will receive his or her own Crayola Sidewalk Chalk set to keep. Other prizes will be awarded. Three different age groups will receive their own “Imagine Your Story” instructions and be assigned a special place for their creative drawing! Sign-ups are not required, so come on over and have a fantastic time!
Every Monday in July through August 10, will be the Girl Scouts of Western Ohio “Virtual Sky’s the Limit Series.” This program is for girls in grades K-5! Come and explore the world around and above you. Join us to sample what Girls Scouts has to offer. Make new friends, have an outdoor adventure and learn about space. Learn to tie nautical knots, make edible moon phases and your own Mars rover! The program will be every Monday from 10:00 – 11:00. All activity items will be supplied. Sign-ups are necessary, but if you cannot get the application completed right away, come on over anyway! You will love what we will be doing!
July 6th – Week 1 – Star Constellations – Create your own 3D star constellation. Learn about Stars and Star Constellations. Get Bandanas.
July 13th – Week 2 – Moon Phases – Learn all the different phases of the moon using cookies. Learn why these phases are so important.
July 20th – Week 3 – Fling Flyers – Engineer your own Fling Flyer (Supped Up Paper Airplane.) Learn what makes it fly the best and compete with other girls. Try real Astronaut food.
July 27th – Week 4 – Girl Scouts Traditions – Learn to light your own “Edible” fire – Create a S’more SWAP and learn some traditional Girl Scout songs and games.
August 3rd – Week 5 – Service Project – Paint Kindness Rocks to set around town.
August 10th – Week 6 – Hot Air Balloons – Make Hot Air Balloon Sun catchers and practice more Girl Scout Songs. Celebrate finishing the series!
Every Friday – Friday Flick’s & BINGO – Beginning Friday, July 10, come join us for an outstanding G or PG rated movie followed by three games of BINGO, which includes prizes for the top three winners in each game! A list of movies is posted at JR Clarke. No sign-ups are required for the movie and bingo! Just surprise us and show up at 1:00p. The event will be over around 3:15p.
Tuesdays, July 14th, July 21st and July 28th – Miss Laurie will be presenting three very special Storybook Trails with activities for children of all ages. This is an outside activity, so please park in the middle of the parking lot or on the street to open up the sides of the lot for the Storybook Trail! You can come anytime between 9am to 11am to participate and stay as long as you want. More information coming with themes for each week. No sign-ups needed, just come and enjoy the story and activity!
Thursdays, July 16 and July 30 – “Imagine Your G-Rated Book Club” for grades 5-10. Mrs. Roeth will be hosting this book club and sign-ups are mandatory so that appropriate books can be ordered in advance of the July 16. Each participant will have three choices of books. Each person will vote for one book and the entire group will read the book with the most votes. The Book Club will last for about an hour with a “hands-on” activity provided for each person! Last year, this book club went on a field trip to the Dayton Art Institute. If all goes fine, we will be looking at a field trip this year, too! Contact the library at 937-473-2226.
Thursday, July 23 – “This is the Nest That Robin Built” – We will be exploring this story of Mother Robin, who is protecting her nest of eggs! The activity is for all ages and will provide storytelling, making crafts for the nest, creating Mother Robin’s nest and watching the nestlings hatch! Lots of fun for all. This will take place partially inside and outside and will last from 1p – 2:30p. Sign-up is mandatory due to the size of the class and ordering appropriate materials. Ten-twelve participants will be the maximum. If we have additional “peeps” sign-up, then a 2nd class will be held from 3:30p – 5p. Contact the library at 937-473-2226.
Thursday, July 30 from 3p – 5p will be our “Walk around Lego Land” building activity! There will be three age divisions with three different themes. Participants will have two hours to build their “creation.” Every person will also receive the same number and type of Legos for the individual themes. Get ready for the “People’s Choice Award” among others. Sign-Up in advance, so that we can have the correct amount of Lego’s for every child “Young and Old!” Yes…there will be an Adult Division!
