Dental clinic benefits from donors

MIAMI COUNTY — Give Where You Live of Miami County has presented its fourth quarter grant to the Miami County Dental Clinic. Awarding of the grant was accomplished virtually instead of the normal face-to-face meeting. Members nominated their favorite charities via email. From the list of nominations, three charities were randomly selected, and members individually researched each of the three charities. Selection of the grant recipeint was accomplished through online voting.

Since 2008, the Miami County Dental Clinic (MCDC) has been dedicated to providing quality dental care and oral health education to those in the community benefiting from affordable, compassionate and accessible dental services to low-income, uninsured, under-insured patients. The clinic has over 12,000 active patients from Troy, Piqua, Tipp City, West Milton, Covington, Sidney, Bradford, New Carlisle, Pleasant Hill and Casstown. On average, roughly half their patients are uninsured and qualify for the sliding fee scale. The rest are mostly on state-assisted insurances, with the remainder on commercial insurances provided through an employer. The Clinic specializes in routine and emergency examinations, hygiene, extractions, rotary endodontics, amalgam and composite restorations, dentures, partials and crowns.

Members are a group of women and men who have the desire to support charitable organizations impacting Miami County. The organization was started in 2015 and is a Giving Circle patterned after the operation of 100+ Women. Members meet four times a year, and each member brings a blank check for $100 to the meeting. Any member can nominate a Miami County charity. Members who come to the meeting can put the name of the charity they want to speak about into the hat. Three names are drawn at random. Selected members make a 5-minute presentation about each cause. Then there is a 5-minute Q&A about the presentations. Members then vote on which cause to support and the top vote-getting charity then receives all the checks, made out to them on the spot — all done in about 20 minutes.

Membership to Give Where You Live of Miami County is open throughout the year. The next meeting is scheduled for Feb. 11 at the Zion Lutheran Church, 14 W. st Walnut St., Tipp City. If COVID-19 restrictions prohibit meeting face-to-face, members will meet virtually. For more information, or to sign up as a member, givewhereyoulive.wixsite.com/miamicounty.
