Tipp, Milton win sectional tennis titles: Saturday sports roundup

TROY — Tippecanoe’s Dakota Schroeder and the Milton-Union doubles team of Shannon Brumbaugh and Taylor Falb won sectional championships at the Division II sectional tournament Saturday in Troy, while the Red Devils’ Mira Patel finished third in the singles bracket.

Schroeder, the No. 1 seed in the singles bracket, faced off against teammate and No. 4 seed Patel in the semifinal round, winning 6-1, 6-2 to earn a shot at the sectional title against No. 2 Emily Marchal from Greenville — the only player to defeat Schroeder this year. In the final, though, Schroeder swept Marchal 6-1, 6-1 to earn a No. 1 seed for the district tournament.

In the consolation final, Patel defeated Northwestern’s Leah Fraker, the No. 3 seed, 6-4, 6-4 to place third.

Brumbaugh and Falb, the No. 2 seed in the doubles bracket, defeated Northwestern’s third-seeded Errett and Yeager 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinal round, while Tippecanoe’s Amelia and Eliza Zweizig — the No. 2 seed — beat Northwestern’s Pederson and Tanner 6-3, 6-1 in the semis.

In the final round, Brumbaugh and Falb upset the Zweizigs in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to earn a No. 1 seed for the district tournament.

The district tournament will be held Thursday and Saturday at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.

COLDWATER — Covington’s boys were fifth at the Coldwater Invitational cross country meet Saturday,

Covington was fifth with 166 points. Mic Barhorst was 18th (17:46.66), Britton Miller was 23rd (17:53.33), Asher Long was 36th (18:17.06), Tyler Alexander was 41st (18:27.59) and Devin Brummitt was 48th (18:40.23).

Bradford was 19th with 580 points, led by Hunter Biddlestone in 116th (22:22.49).

On the girls side, Bradford was 16th with 383 points, led by Skipp Miller in 15th (20:47.24), and Covington was 17th with 413 points, led by Johanna Welborn in 19th (20:54.18).

Invitational

ANNA — Bethel’s boys placed seventh at the Anna Rocket Invitational Saturday, while the Bees girls placed 10th.

The boys were seventh with 165 points. Trent Schwiekhardt was 12th (17:28.6), Kaleb Roberts was 14th (17:31.4), Jaiden Hogge was 41st (18:27.9), Nathaniel Patton was 44th (18:33.2) and Bryce Schwiekhardt was 66th (19:17). The girls were 10th with 268 points, led by Mackenzie Nida in 61st (23:28.4).

Newton 2

PLEASANT HILL — Newton’s boys soccer team jumped out in front of Greeneview Saturday, but the Rams scored five unanswered goals to win 5-2.

Noah Brush had a goal and an assist, Ely Cook had a goal and Jonathan Maxwell had an assist as the Indians took a 2-0 lead. But the Rams tied the score by halftime and scored three second-half goals to win.

Other scores: Miami East 3, Milton-Union (10-3-1) 0.

SIDNEY — Lindsey Magoteaux and Molly Greene each scored a goal and Heidi Toner posted a shutout in net as the Lehman girls soccer team defeated West Liberty-Salem 2-0 Saturday.
