Devils boys golf bests Troy, clinches MVL: Tuesday sports roundup

VANDALIA — The Tippecanoe boys golf team wrapped up the Miami Valley League championship Tuesday at Cassel Hills, winning a battle of 8-0 teams in league play by defeating Troy 150-172.

The Red Devils (12-0, 9-0 MVL) posted four sub-40 scores to put the league title on ice. Matt Salmon led the way with a 36, Braydon Bottles shot 37, Nathan Gagnon shot 38 and Colin Maalouf capped of the scoring with a 39, with Joey Pleiman adding a 43 and Will Riehle a 47.

Ryan Dowling and Henry Johnston both shot 41 to lead the Trojans (10-5, 8-1 MVL), Bryce Massingill shot 44, Owen Evilsizor and Tag Bender both shot 46 and Kellen Glover shot 47.

“Boy, it was not in the cards tonight. Tipp played awfully well,” Troy coach Mark Evilsizor said. “They’re just a really good team. They shot 10 under their average tonight, and to be honest, we needed them to shoot 10 over their average for us to have a good shot. We shot under our average but just didn’t play well enough to really challenge them.”

TIPP CITY — Milton-Union took on Bethel on Tuesday in the battle for Homestead Golf Course — both teams’ home course this season, with the Bulldogs winning 166-212.

Max Grafflin was medalist for Milton-Union (13-4) with a 39, Sam Case shot 40, Nathan Thompson shot 43 and Grady Vechazone shot 44.

MINSTER — Newton dropped a non-league match Tuesday at Arrowhead Golf Club, falling to Fort Loramie 166-174.

Mitchell Montgomery and Brady Downing both shot 42 to lead the Indians, Ross Ferrell and Quinn Peters both shot 45, Chandler Peters shot 46 and Alex Koon shot 53.

TROY — The Troy boys soccer team hosted rival Piqua Tuesday at Troy Memorial Stadium, shutting out the Indians 8-0.

Jon Hipolito had a hat trick and Gavin Marshall scored two goals to lead the Trojans (8-1), Jaden Williams had a goal and an assist, Evan Joins and Sam Kazmaier each scored a goal, Caleb Steggeman had two assists and Lucas Buschur had one assist. Troy outshot the Indians (3-5-1) 21-1 on the night, with Troy goalkeeper Sean Miller making one save to post a shutout.

TIPP CITY — Tippecanoe (9-0) strengthened its MVL lead Tuesday with a 4-0 victory at home over Butler (6-2-1).

Owen Hadden had a goal and an assist, Drew Harshbarger, Jackson Kleather and Evan Stonerock each scored a goal, Jake Smith had two assists and Jonny Baileys had one assist for the Devils. Clay Vaughn made two saves to record the shutout.

Corinn Siefring led the Devils with 11 kills, a block and 10 digs, Rachel Wildermuth had eight kills, two blocks, seven digs and 19 assists, Ashley Aselage had seven kills and a block, Olivia Gustavson had three kills and a block, Alaina Titley had 16 digs, three assists and two aces, Kaitlyn Husic had eight digs and four aces, Hannah Wildermuth had eight assists, Scotti Hoskins had two assists and Molly Achtenberg had two aces.

TROY — Troy won its sixth straight Tuesday night since falling to MVL leader Tippecanoe, sweeping Fairborn 25-14, 25-11, 25-14 at home and leaving two more matches before the rematch against the Devils.

Macie Taylor had 10 kills and 12 digs and Anna Boezi had 10 kills, four blocks and four digs to lead the Trojans (12-1). Hallie Westmeyer added seven kills, a dig and a block, Brynn Siler had four kills, three digs and a block, Amber Poore had three kills, an assist and two digs, Ellie Fogarty had one kill, 11 assists, two aces, seven digs and a block and Breanna Grey had one kill. COVINGTON — Covington built some momentum heading into Thursday’s match at Franklin Monroe on Tuesday, sweeping Mississinawa Valley at home, 25-10, 25-19, 25-22.

Nigella Reck had 13 kills and 15 digs, Carlie Besecker had 10 kills and 19 digs, Lauren York had six kills and eight digs, Emmaline Kiser had five kills, Ellery Reck had 31 assists, seven digs and four aces and Hillary Hoying had five digs.
