Two ‘smash and grabs’ at MCPD bike path

MIAMI COUNTY — Miami County Sheriff’s Office officials are investigating two “smash and grab” incidents that occurred in a parking lot of the bike path on Monday evening.

On Monday, two separate victims reported they had parked their cars at the Peterson Road/Farrington Reserve parking lot off of County Road 25-A, between Piqua and Troy. Both reported when they returned from their walk, the windows of their vehicles were smashed out and valuables, such as purses with money and credit cards, were stolen. Both thefts were reported between 8:30 and 9 p.m. Monday evening.

Miami County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Steve Lord said, “We have had thefts from vehicles occasionally in the parking areas of the bike path accesses. Security for the bike path is primarily handled by the deputy assigned to the Miami County Park District and those assigned to extra duty for bicycle patrols. Notifications have been sent to our deputies assigned to the patrol section to give extra attention to the bike path accesses.

“Citizens are asked to be mindful of leaving valuable property in their cars that are easily visible. It is suggested that valuable items be put into the trunk of the vehicle or otherwise out of view. Also, citizens are asked to report any suspicious activity by calling 911 and a deputy will be sent to investigate. ”
