CINCINNATI — On Thursday, the Troy Legends bounced back from a tough loss to rival Piqua the previous night, kicking off play in the Great American All Star Classic tournament with a 5-0 victory over the Cincinnati Royals.
Grant Saunders — who flirted with a no-hitter in Lancaster two weeks ago, not allowing one for 6 2-3 innings — pitched a two-hit shutout Thursday, striking out five and walking one to get the win.
And the offense gave him all the support he would need in the top of the first, too. Cy Baisden drew a leadoff walk and was bunted to second by Jonny Baileys, then Darius Boeke singled to put runners on the corners. An RBI sac fly by Warren Hartzell gave Troy a 1-0 lead.
In the third, Baileys singled and stole second then was driven home on an RBI single by Boeke to make it a 2-0 game. And in the sixth, the Legends put together a three-run inning to put the game on ice. Cam Swartout doubled and scored on an RBI single by Gavin Martin, who then scored on an RBI triple by Baileys. Boeke then plated Baileys with a sac fly to make it a 5-0 game.
Garrett LeMaster also added two hits in the game for the Legends, who improved to 18-20-1 with the win. Troy was scheduled to face the Cincinnati Flash Friday night at Kings, then the Cincinnati Baseball Club at 6 p.m. Saturday and a rematch against the Royals to finish off the tournament at the Blue Ash Sports Complex.
